Politico, an American media company that voices opinions about the prevailing political scenario was founded in 2007 in Arlington County, Virginia by John F Harris and Jim VandleHei from ‘The Washington Post’ with financial assistance from Robert L Albritton, the founder of Capitol News Company. The news company distributes content through all the media channels including website, television, radio, newspaper, and podcasts.
In 2008, the company expanded its operations for the presidential election, hiring additional reporters, editors, and other employees. It also expanded its newspaper circulation. Politico grew by three times between the 2008 and 2012 elections. With this growth, the company also got two of the most noted political commenters, Michael Kinsley and Joe Scarborough. Both commenters were hired as opinion writers. In 2009, the name of the website was shortened from ‘The Politico’ to just ‘Politico.’ In October 2013, VandeHei became Politico’s CEO and the company continued to grow under his leadership.
In 2014, the company’s revenue grew by 25%, and by 2016, Politico had nearly 500 employees spanning the world. The Politico Playbook, an early morning daily newsletter, was launched in 2007, while Politico Pro was launched in 2010, and Politico Magazine, an online, bi-monthly magazine, was launched in 2017. In 2013, the company acquired the online news website ‘Capital New York.’ Similarly, in 2014, the company sought to expand its services to Europe with the help of a joint venture with Axel Springer SE, a German publisher. In 2018, Politico redesigned its website to make it more mobile-friendly.
